Jesuit Perspective

This image along with the one beneath it reveals an interesting difference. The first picture is presumably the original and has not been altered by the Jesuits. However, the image below shows an "x" or a "cross" on the woman's left side of her chest. This suggests that the Jesuits were tracking who was a converted Catholic fro the Native King Island beliefs.

This picture also includes an "x" or a "cross" on the woman on the right.
Accompanied with these photos were letters from Father Bellarmine Lafortune who lived among the King Islanders to convert them to Catholicism. One letter in particular was written to a King Island man about his wife who was living on the island with Lafortune. He told the man that his wife "died just as she lived," which was immorally. He even mentions that they "buried her like a dog" because she had lived such an indignified life. He then reminds the man to "pray everyday" and to continue to "live well," unlike his wife.
These "crosses" or "x's" either symbolize the people the Jesuits have converted, or the ones that are continuing to practice their native beliefs and could be serving as a problem tot their mission.
